Ornamental Drinking Fountain.
Restoration Project
Ornamental Drinking Fountain, People's Park, Tiverton.
This Project is now completed thank you for all your support.
Project completed with many thanks to all who donated and who helped fundraise for this project.
Just over 18 Months ago, Allies Mid Devon started raising money to restore the Ornamental Drinking Fountain in People’s Park.
During the Covid-19 crisis our fundraising efforts were put on hold and we diverted some of our resources to supporting C.H.A.T. and the Tiverton Covid Volunteer Force. Allies Mid Devon supplied a large number of their joint information leaflets and assisted in distributing them to Tiverton households.
We are now refocusing our efforts on various projects, including the restoration of the stonework on the Ornamental Drinking Fountain in People’s Park. This was donated in 1888 to the newly opened People’s Park by George Hadow, Rector of Tidcombe, to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. It was a busy year, with many notable events – the Lawn Tennis Association was founded, The Football League was established, the pneumatic bicycle tyre was patented, the game of Snakes and Ladders was introduced to the UK from India, Thomas Hardy’s book ‘Wessex Tales’ was published, J. Arthur Rank, film magnate was born and Edward Lear died. The fountain is now over 132 years old, but is in urgent need of attention. The park has already lost its cannon and bandstand – we aim to make sure the fountain isn’t lost, but stands proud for the next 130 plus years.
